Refugee Resettlement

The journey of a refugee or asylum seeker is marred by insecurity and hardship. First, they make the painful choice to flee their homes to save their lives. Next, they must take an uncertain journey to find safety in a nearby country. When they reach their destination, they may be safe but their future is in doubt. If conditions improve in their home country, they may be able to return in time. However, some of them can never go back nor stay in their first country of asylum, in which case the most vulnerable amongst them may be considered for resettlement to a third country.

While many countries will grant asylum to those fleeing from persecution and strife, not all of them will admit them as residents. Refugee resettlement is the process of finding a permanent home for refugees. Often, the destination country will have a drastically different culture, economy, or language than the refugee's home. This presents a tremendous challenge for the refugee, their family, and the resettlement country.

The International Catholic Migration Commission is an organization committed to protecting and serving uprooted peoples throughout the world. Part of our mission is helping with refugee resettlement. We use our longstanding expertise to process resettlement applications in multiple countries. In addition, we support existing UN agencies and governments by advocating directly for refugees.
