While much of contemporary news coverage paints international migration as something done mainly by refugees and asylum-seekers, these vulnerable people do not account for all international migration. Many migrants leave their home country in search of work in a neighboring country or elsewhere. These migrant workers may eventually seek permanent residency in their destination, but many intend to return home after their work is done. This is especially true of migrant laborers who work in seasonal fields.
International migration is still a risky and treacherous path, even if done in search of better-paying work. Some countries do not extend worker protections to migrants, making them very vulnerable to exploitation. Despite most economies benefiting tremendously from international migration and migrant labor, migrant workers are too often deprived of their dignity.
ICMC is dedicated to promote the rights of migrant workers throughout the world. Through capacity-building and research programs, we seek to address the causes of international migration and work to enhance the protection of workers’ rights. Learn more about this initiative by visiting our website.
