Gender-based violence is an unfortunate consequence of existing inequality, power dynamics, and discrimination based on gender. Gender-based violence can affect anyone, but it most commonly occurs when men commit violence against women and girls. Much of this violence is commonplace, occurring in the home, or deemed socially permissible by local culture. Even worse, conditions of war, poverty, and social unrest are likely to exacerbate the conditions that lead to violence. This makes refugees exceedingly vulnerable to gender-based violence.
The International Catholic Migration Commission seeks to protect and serve refugees throughout the world. Part of this goal is reducing incidents of gender-based violence via a holistic approach with methods that protect survivors and equip them with valuable resources. We train volunteer refugees to identify and respond to violence within communities. In addition, we provide spaces where survivors can seek shelter, report incidents of gender-based violence, and access necessary services.
ICMC also takes preventative measures to fight the sources of gender-based violence. Our facilitators enact programming designed to critically combat discrimination and inequality based on gender. These programs help refugees from all walks of life be aware of the dangers and impermissibility of gender-based violence as well as equipping them with resources in case they are victimized themselves. Visit the ICMC website to learn more about gender-based violence and other hardships endured by refugees. With your support, we can fulfil our mission to protect and serve displaced people.
